Preaching the Genealogy
Preaching the genealogy of Jesus is difficult. What can you glean so you can give everyone hope?
Jesus…being the son of Joseph…the son of Adam, the son of God.
Luke 3:23, 38
Luke didn’t start with the genealogy like Matthew did.
In departures from what’s expected, ask, “Why?”
Instead, Luke put the genealogy right behind God affirming Jesus as his beloved Son.
Affirming Jesus’ divinity.
And then Luke affirms Jesus’ humanity.
He is the Son of God…and the Son of Joseph.
Luke also did something else Matthew did not do.
He traced the lineage back to Adam.
Luke’s account of Jesus’ life was primarily for those far from God. Those who do not think they have a shot with God.
And so he brilliantly ties Jesus back to the human father of everyone…Adam.
And even more brilliantly ties Jesus back to the divine Father of everyone…God.
As you preach and lead, tie everyone to these two fathers. Everyone needs to know they have a shot with God because they are created by God.
And they have a shot with God because Jesus came so everyone can see God.
