Woe to the Spiritually Abundant
Jesus condemns those who think they are spiritually abundant on their own.
But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
Luke 6:23
If the “blessed” verses are about those who recognize their inability to bring about their own well off-ness…
Then the “woes” are about those who think they can.
So no, Jesus isn’t about condemning every rich person.
But rather those who think they are rich, abundant, lack nothing, are well off on their own.
And more specifically, the religious leaders who think they can bring about their own spiritual richness.
And even worse, the religious leaders who think they are the example of spiritual life because of what they do for themselves.
Jesus is giving those who want to know God, but don’t think they’re good enough to know God a crack in the door and saying, “Come take a look.”
Church leader, a rich mentality is what you have to fight against. Hard.
Not only inside yourself, but inside your church. The longer you are a Christian, the more likely you are to think you have made yourself abundantly spiritual.
The more you do for Jesus the more you think you have made yourself abundantly spiritual.
The people you lead need to see someone who is desperate for Jesus to work in their own life and in the lives of others. Not someone who thinks they are spiritually abundant on their own.
